Import Product Details in Multiple Languages to OpenCart

When starting to sell more globally, it may be necessary to display the content of online store in the language appropriate for a particular audience. If online shoppers can't read and understand what you have on your website, your chances of succeeding on an international level are pretty slim.

Studies show that vast percent of consumers in non-English-speaking countries prefer to buy products in their native language. This fact highlights the importance of localizing e-commerce websites to each targeted country and selling the products in different languages.

To be able to display the content for the view dynamically, your data must contain fields that are specific to a language. For example, if client chooses French language, he/she sees product name and description in this language.

In case your OpenCart is multilingual, it is essential to be able to assign or update info in the easiest way possible. You can import product details in different languages, rather than add these details manually.

Store Manager for OpenCart allows you to create new products or modify them in several languages in just a single import process. No need to import a few times, each time for a language.

File Preparation

The main thing here is to prepare the file and information in it. Your CSV file will need to include a column per field and per language.

Remember to include the identification field (product ID, model, sku, upc, ean code), the name field and whatever fields have translations. These are the following columns: name, description, meta description, meta keyword, tags, category, stock status, weight class, length class etc. Please note, that you need to have let’s say - Name English, Name German, Name French in separate rows indicated.

Your can ignore fields that have numeric values because they should be reading your default language data and for them will be common database record for all the languages, so there is no need to repeat those values.

Import Running

Importing file via Import Wizard of Store Manager you have to pay special attention to the step where you need to assign columns of your spreadsheet to database fields.

There you will have fields with language codes in brackets, for example, Product Name (uk) and Product Name (fr). So you have to assign the column ‘Name French’ of your file to Product Name (fr) database field and ‘Name English’ to Product Name (uk) and so on. The same is true for other fields that you have in different languages.

Please note: If your supplier provides you separate files with information on products in various languages, you have to import first the spreadsheet that includes details in default language and then upload the rest of files with info in other languages.
